BIG FORMS

We will explore how architecture can respond to density and large-scale urban and infrastructural transformations with optimism and spatial complexity.

Following the economic difficulties of the early 1990s, Copenhagen underwent a profound transformation and population growth, driven by major infrastructural and urban projects. Against this backdrop, we will examine contemporary large-scale projects by BIG alongside historical examples by architects such as Kay Fisker, Hans Christian Hansen and others.

The juxtaposition of historical large-scale forms, strongly shaped by repetition, order and serial principles, and contemporary projects shaped by variation, spatial spectacle and programmatic hybridity, creates a field in which we can critically discuss architectural form, phenomena and ideologies of density, sustainability, economic efficiency, materiality and architectural language. We will evaluate the spatial and social potentials of such dense and hybrid large-scale forms, and how architecture can accommodate contradictory demands within the increasingly dense urban environment of Copenhagen.
