«The Mediterranean sun is the same for all men.»
Albert Camus, Opening Speech at the Maison de La Culture

The study trip organised by the Focus Architecture & Energy leads us to Marseille. In spirit of Camus we will discover, that the twin cities Marseille and Algiers, understand the Mediterranean as a cultural space and were in some cases influenced by the same architects.
The focus of the trip is the culture of residential architecture. We will be interested in the relationship between inside and outside, with its graduated transitions from private life to public spaces. The urban experiments of French architects in Marseille or Algiers, as for Le Corbusier or Fernand Pouillon, are important examples of social dwellings. In Marseille, we try to approach the
climatic conditions of the Mediterranean region, keeping the oposing coast in mind. The use of stone from near quarries provided valued building resource, since lack of material in the postwar years. Will this eternal material revive our habitat in an energetic sense?
All students in the Master’s degree programme may participate in the study trip. First informations and estimated costs will be announced at the beginning of the semester for immediate registration.
