The challenges of the energy crisis

After the immigration, financial, climate and health crises, we are facing an energy crisis, which in turn is directly related to the war in Ukraine. Global crises affect society as a whole. Some come and go, leaving behind victims and winners. Others, such as the climate crisis in particular, will remain and occupy us for decades and threaten us in the long term. The energy crisis, on the other hand, seems manageable, at least in the European context, because we have the technical and financial means to solve the problems at hand. However, the debate on the political and social implications has only just begun. We need extensive, efficient infrastructures for generating renewable energy in the foreseeable future. Furthermore, intelligently chosen additional uses could help to integrate the infrastructure better into landscapes and society. But where and how can they be created? Architects must not stand on the sidelines when it comes to this highly relevant social issue.

The work of the semester begins with the development of a strategy, and the complexity of the task is continuously increased during the semester. It is divided into interim critiques, pin-ups and roundtable critiques, and is accompanied by professional inputs. We will also be taking a look at exceptional infrastructure constructions/buildings in the Alps on a two-day excursion.

The Biennale svizzera del territorio will take place on the theme of (non)finito from 6–8 October 2022. The theme coincides perfectly with the semester programme. We therefore invite students to participate.
