Stéphane Couturier, „Alger, Cité ‚Climat de France‘, Façade No.2“, 2011–2013

Modulverantwortung: Annika Seifert
Lehrteam: Annika Seifert, Prof. Luca Deon; Assistant: Anthony Frank

«Alger la blanche», has been a place of fascination and yearning for artists, writers and architects since time immemorial – the ‘white city’, famous for its glaring light reflected by the bright, white-washed Arabic palaces, the French colonial buildings and the white modernist structures on the steep Mediterranean coast of North Africa. In the coming semester, we will turn to this exciting city and study urban dwellings on a larger scale, whereby our designs will start out from a mid-range scale (housing typology and culture), from which we will move, on the one hand, to the scale of the city (topography and context) and, on the other hand, to the scale of detail (materiality and construction).
We will find our inspiration both in the vernacular examples of traditional courtyard houses and Maghreb housing culture and from the architectural experiments of modernity between the social housing of CIAM and the large-scale developments of French architects. Both show possible strategies to deal with the hot climate of Algiers and will accompany us on her search for an architectural stance towards our own project, which will be developed in relation to its specific context and at the same time enrich our universal repertoire as designers.
