RiskMatrix – Proactive Identification of operational Risk at the example of Swiss International Air Lines

Simon Widmer

Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) is «The Airline of Switzerland», serving over 100 destinations in 44 countries worldwide. SWISS is committed to continuously improve its product and service quality, i.e. by taking a more proactive approach towards operational challenges affecting the passenger experience.

Hereby, the alert-based decision support tool RiskMatrix is being developed which proactively identifies operational risks caused by i.e. Crew, Technics and Operations within the critical timeframe of 96 hours before departure.

In this thesis project, the RiskMatrix application was enhanced by the capability to identify potential delays caused by air traffic control inefficiencies. Additionally, the Downgrade Opportunity feature was developed which reduces operational cost and stabilizes operations by identifying flights which may be operated by a smaller aircraft type.

Based on individual risk influencers, RiskMatrix compiles an overall risk which improves situational awareness and enables decision makers to take proactive and data-driven decisions towards operational challenges.
