Virtual Learning at GIBZ

Virtual Learning at GIBZ

Learning in Virtual Spaces Using Virtual and Augmented Reality

A five-year project was launched together with the Gewerblich-Industrieelles Bildungszentrum Zug (GIBZ). The project focuses on learning in virtual spaces using Virtual and Augmented Reality.

Apprentices prepare for the world of work at vocational schools, in intercompany courses, and within their training companies, where they develop expertise in their respective professions. With Virtual and Augmented Reality, an entirely new virtual learning environment emerges—one in which mistakes are allowed and even encouraged in order to gain valuable experience. For example, a trainee healthcare assistant can accidentally administer the wrong medication in the virtual environment without facing serious consequences.

The first pilot classes at GIBZ will explore various new learning formats within initial vocational education and in the vocational baccalaureate program. The project began in January 2021 with fundamental planning activities. During this phase, the first three clusters (health, planning, and natural sciences) were defined. In a second step, learning content for VR, AR, and 3D is being specified and implemented together with the Immersive Realities Center team at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. In a later phase, not only GIBZ students but also training companies and the relevant intercompany course centers (ÜK) will be able to offer training units in the Interaction Space at HSLU Informatics. The Interaction Space is a publicly accessible room (by prior registration) where SMEs and vocational schools can experience Virtual and Augmented Reality beyond the gaming and entertainment industry.

The goals of this collaboration also include the appropriate evaluation and assessment of the developed educational modules with regard to their standardized use in vocational education. Both GIBZ and HSLU benefit from the exchange of knowledge in developing new and modern educational formats while keeping their educational institutions innovative and attractive.
