Project Description
This preliminary project explores the potential of Augmented Reality (AR) as a design and planning tool in urban planning processes. The research is carried out by an interdisciplinary project team using the development of Emmenpark as a case study.
Digital citizen participation has established itself as an effective format in democratic societies, offering significant advantages both in engaging people and in collaborative work and decision-making. However, there are still very few applications in this field that explore or utilize the participatory, design, and planning potential of AR.
Ideally, participatory urban planning processes should encourage the joy of designing and shaping spaces. Therefore, approaches are needed that spark curiosity and empathy and enable meaningful exchange. The promise of such an AR planning tool lies in the fact that users do not have to adapt to a given situation only after a redesign has been completed. Instead, they can participate early in the planning process and grow together through active design participation and collaboration, similar to professional planners. In this way, stakeholders can influence the outcome, help shape their built environment, and develop a stronger sense of identification with projects.
As a first practice-oriented step, the project examined the potential of AR as a design and planning tool in collaboration with the municipality of Emmen, Luzern Nord, the CityScienceLab in Hamburg, and Planteam AG. The insights gained subsequently led to a third-party funded research and development project.
