Caminho Português

The network of paths forming the Camino de Santiago stands as a testament to one of the oldest forms of travel, one whose living tradition can offer valuable context for understanding today’s phenomena of mass tourism and their cultural, social and economic impacts.

We will be travelling in and around the branches of the Camino de Santiago in the north of Portugal, a country that has been witnessing a touristic and real-estate boom for the last decade, with far-reaching effects on the country’s landscape and society. Our attention will be divided between old and contemporary ways of materialising the many aspirations behind tourism (whether pleasure, contemplation, escape or adventure) through architectural form. Choosing Porto as our base, we will set the city’s rich 20th-century architectural heritage in focus while exploring the coastal region of northern Portugal, meeting key actors across generations along the way.
