VIENNA

Ungefähre Hauptrichtung(en)

Ungefähre Hauptrichtung(en) will bring us to Vienna, Austria’s largest city and an ever-expanding, ever-evolving European metropolis that is home to numerous (in-)famous architects and their buildings.
Specifically, Hermann Czech will be the main figure that we follow and use as a pivot into various aspects of architecture, scenography and urbanism. We will embark on Czech’s vast oeuvre – both projects and writings – and make it resonate with other architects, artists and writers that we meet throughout the city. Every day will be dedicated to an ‘Approximate Line of Action’ by Czech: transformation & multi-layerdness, mannerism & participation, irony & illusion, coincidence & appropriation, complexity & contraction, production & consumption, body & form.
As open threads, these topics will guide us to further projects that will be accompanied by and discussed in the streets and cafés of Vienna with local actors from various fields.

“To calm everything down I propose to view all public relations with suspicion: all publicity that is not theory or design, all ‘social engagement’ that is not political action, all ‘project architecture’ and related Schmunzelkunst, all obscenity that is not produced for its own sake – in short, all attempts to extort another role for architecture apart from standing there and keeping quiet. Architecture is not life. Architecture is background. Everything else is not architecture.”

The study trip is open to all students enrolled in the master programme.
