The thesis project offers students a flexible opportunity to tailor their final project according to their interests within the theme of “Ruins of the 21st Century.” They have the option to choose from three different studio tasks, regardless of the professor they initially selected. Each task provides specific thematic focuses and methodological approaches.
In the “Landscape as Ruin” project, highways are seen as monumental extensions of the landscape. Students are tasked with designing spaces in and around these structures, addressing social questions of inclusion and exclusion. They will explore new uses for neglected urban areas, referred to as “terrain vague.”
“The Ark,” inspired by the story of Noah’s Ark, focuses on designing shelters for people in need. Students employ traditional construction techniques from their home countries to create resilient architecture that blends cultural traditions with contemporary demands.
In the “Spaces of Labour” project, the emphasis is on examining and designing infrastructures such as waste facilities and urban nurseries in Lucerne. Students analyse the often-invisible labour behind these facilities and their architectural significance. The goal is to develop future-proof solutions that address the challenges of the climate crisis.
