Reproducing the Inclusive City: Care, Maintenance, and Repair
The spring 2025 workshop cycle highlights the centrality of care, maintenance, and repair for the reproduction of inclusive urban spaces. Care, for instance connects individual built objects such as a protected historic building with the preservation of the wider townscape; it links the production of the built environment with questions of planetary care; and it can create shared matters of care and initiate caring communities. Different to contemporary capitalist society, which has assigned care tasks either to the private domain or to commercial business, in many nonmodern and/or nonwestern societies these tasks are linked to ritual and festival.
Mundane and everyday acts of upkeep ensure the longevity and livability of our cities and infrastructures. However, the labor of caring, maintaining, and repairing, despite being indispensable to social life, frequently remains overlooked and undervalued, regardless of the growing awareness for our contemporary crisis of care.
In this module, we seek neither to romanticize care, maintenance, and repair, nor do we want to associate these activities with moral virtue. Our present situation demands that we see them as vitally important. We understand care not primarily as conservative, but as critical and creative—as an active attitude that involves design decisions; for example, in determining an object’s potential for repair, or deliberating the limits of reparability, or deciding when structures might be beyond repair.
Leading practitioners will present their positions and offer practical skills and methods in series of full-day workshops and exercises. While each workshop is self-contained, students are encouraged to form their own synthesis of the course contents through both individual and collective reflection.
