The collaborative project „The Culture of Water“ was begun in the autumn semester of 2018 in collaboration with the Kyoto Institute of Technology (KIT). The main goal of this five-year study is to research the architecture, the living conditions and landscape around Lake Lucerne and around Lake Biwa, located northeast of Kyoto, the largest freshwater lake in Japan. We will use architectural design as a creative method of research to develop plausible solutions to contemporary buildings with, at and on the water, and explore the interactions between nature, culture, architecture and people in the context of two different cultures. After the past semesters of collaboration under three topics Water and Danger, Water and Beauty, Water and Commons, we will now turn to the fourth and the last theme Water and Eternity. The site of this effort will be Lake Lucerne in the Spring Semester 2022 and Lake Biwa in the Autumn Semester 2022. This semester we will address the question of Eternity at and with the Lake Lucerne, in particular, Lake Uri. Our guiding instruments for finding a place and working with architecture will be the aspects of understanding the relation of stone and water. With an eye from the long history of Lake Lucerne to a possible future, we allow ourselves to be guided by the thought experiment of rethinking Eternity and ask ourselves the questions: „What is and what does eternity mean in regard to nature and human beings? “ This semester and the following one, we will, together with our Japanese team, explore the significance of Eternity has for Westerners and Easterners through the study of stone, water, nature and architecture.
The study trip (23-24.2, 15-17.3) is exclusively for the students, who join Focus Material, resp. The Culture of Water.
