Ruins of the 21st Century II
This fall semester the focus project module is centered on the theme “Ruins of the 21st Century”. The three studios approach this topic both in terms of content and methodology in deliberately different ways. At the heart of all three studios is the sustainable transformation of our living environment with its complex social, economic, and ecological interconnections.
Like every semester, students are allocated to the studios according to their priorities following the presentations at the kick-off event. In the case of overbooked studios, the 2nd priorities are applied.
Studio Wettstein Molo: The Ark
Noah received precise instructions for building the ark to ensure the survival of humanity and animals from the great flood. The flood symbolizes the crises we face today and the ark an architecture designed to endure these challenges.
We are designing a sheltered place for people in need. The students will use building techniques from their home countries to engage with the construction process. This approach links the building tradition and the builder’s biography to the location.
Studio Balissat Kaçani: Spaces of Labour: Infrastructure
The studio will explore the significant infrastructures shaping our modern lives, ranging from waste management facilities, sewage to city nurseries in Lucerne. Students will investigate the roles these facilities play, the hidden labor behind their operation, and their architectural impacts. These sites involve diverse labor types across multiple locations, affecting urban space. Based on their findings, students will adapt, extend, or transform one or more facilities to ensure their future-proof roles in addressing the climate crisis.
Studio Bessire Winter, DU Studio: Autobahnbaroque
Autobahnbaroque tackles the lavish sphere of highway infrastructure near Lucerne – Vers une architecture du paysage.
Bridges, substructures, emergency bays, acceleration lanes, enclosures, tunnels, acoustic barriers, drainage ponds, buffer zones, roundabouts, and the like constitute a sprawling building as a result of traffic engineering. We will appropriate the abundance of surface (m2) and building mass (m3) of the A2 with architectural and landscape interventions. From dehumanized traffic infrastructure to rehumanized spaces of coexistence, from orthodox engineering to architectural speculation and exuberance.
