real virtuality – drawing as/is architecture
„I was struck by what seemed at the time the peculiar disadvantage under which architects labour, never working directly with the object of their thought, always working at it through some intervening medium, almost the drawing, while painters and sculptors, who might spend some time on preliminary sketches and maquettes, all ended up working on the thing itself which.“ Robin Evans
„Function doesn‘t have a style, but the way it is represented does.“ Massimo Scolari
Architecture is brought to life through drawings. Drawings are designer‘s true constructions, the physical ones built in a place being their consequence, normally realized by others through a translation process. Virtual presence, formal construction, individual expression and conventional rules: what is the real virtuality of the architectural drawing? What is its specificity? If an image says more than 1000 words, can it also contribute to more than just one building? How theoretical and critical can it be? The course will explore the complex aspects and fruitful consequences of these questions. Analogies and contradictions between theories, ideologies and knowledge, as well as points of contact and contrast with other disciplines will be discussed and deepened in order to intertwine them in multiple levels of knowledge. Architecture is experienced as part of a broader cultural discourse, encouraging students to think beyond trends and position themselves as conscious members of society. Themes presented in lectures and excursions serve as timeless tools for architects. Architectural theories are not mere abstractions – they move between absolute positions and relative relations.
„Drawing has always been more than drawing.“ Jacques Derrida
