Master Thesis Jana Mulle
About the white elefant, the North Pole and the whey – via the absurd to the design
The focus of Jana Mulle’s thesis work is the examination of the Emmi site in Lucerne. In this thesis, the existing cheese warehouse of Emmi AG is supplemented with apartments, commerce and a river bath. The idea of living in a cheese warehouse is absurd, as is the thought of a «Bath» on the roof of the warehouse. The unconventional task demands an equally unconventional approach. A design method is developed via the absurd. The absurd theater of Eugène Ionesco serves as a starting point.
The method of disassembling and reassembling taken up from it is transferred to the work with image and text. Based on Ionesco’s plays and inspired by the short film «Fischknusperli», scenes and dialogues are worked out as they could take place on the new Emmi-Areal.
Through the resulting coincidences in the image and the text, the project is repeatedly questioned and directed onto new paths. Familiar things can be placed in new contexts. Working with scenes and dialogues leads to a deeper engagement with the project and allows its expression to be conveyed. The theory, the collages, the scene descriptions and dialogues merge into a new image of the Emmi-Areal.
