BRIDGING THE MATERIALITY-VIRTUALITY GAP: HYBRID PROFESSIONALS AND THEIR ‘BOUNDARYLESS’ CAREER CONCEPT

ABSTRACT
In the recent decades, much research has been undertaken to develop and refine concepts like portfolio and boundaryless work and the highly qualified external workforce. This paper analyses the self-concepts of so called hybrid professionals. These are highly qualified portfolio workers that create value out of the boundary crossing between different institutions. Based on qualitative research the analysis showed that hybrid professionals have to handle highly complex work arrangements. Especially they have to continuously transform knowledge and balance their independence and their commitment to the promised project activities. The materiality-virtuality-gap is bridged for maintaining their hybrid work style.

Key words: Professionals, flexible employment, highly qualified workforce, boundaryless career
