Smart Reha: Entering a New Era of Stroke Recovery with AI

Smart Reha: Entering a New Era of Stroke Recovery with AI

Could sensor data shorten rehab after a stroke? Daniele Buson, a graduate of the Master’s programme in Data Science at HSLU, believes it’s possible. He is dedicated to SmartVNS – a brain stimulator powered by AI (Artificial Intelligence) and worn in the ear that aids stroke recovery during everyday activities.

Revolutionizing Stroke Rehab with Data, AI, and Smart Wearables

Daniele’s project aims to digitally integrate vast amounts of data from physical devices and make them accessible on a treatment platform. This innovation enables stroke patients to benefit from state-of-the-art neuroscience rehabilitation at home – personalized, professionally supported, AI-enhanced and cost-effective.

Understanding needs before building solutions

“Creating a digital solution starts with understanding the problem,” explains Daniele. The first step to a digital solution was identifying the needs of patients and therapists, ensuring that both perspectives were addressed. Using iterative coding and discussions, Daniele and his team refined the SmartVNS system to align with rehabilitation requirements. By leveraging machine learning, AI, and wearable technology, they created a platform that supports stroke recovery in a seamless and accessible way.

We would like to thank Daniele Buson for sharing his fascinating project!
